Introduction to Schools
School of Telecommunications Engineering

   The School has set up 3 departments: Department of Communication Engineering, Department of Information Engineering and Department of Electronic Technology, and 2 research institutes: Institute of Information Science and Institute of Information Encryption. It has established the state key laboratory of “Integrated Service Network Theory and Key Technique”, the national-grade experimental teaching demonstration center“Experimental Teaching Center of Communication and Information Engineering”, the Ministry of Education key laboratory of “Computer Network and Information Security”, and the Ministry of Information Industry key laboratory of “Radio Communication”.  
   The School offers 4 specialties for undergraduates: communication engineering, information engineering, information security, and digital technique, of which the first three are the Shaanxi provincial name brand specialties. At present there are more than 3300 undergraduates, over 1700 master-degree seeking postgraduates, and more than 300 doctoral students who are studying in the School.
   The disciplines of communication & information system, cryptography, military communication, optical communication, information security, and space information science & technology are granted the rights to confer the doctorate and master’s degree, the discipline of traffic information engineering and control has the right to confer the master’s degree, and the program for post-doctoral research has been set up in the discipline of information and communication engineering. “Communication and information system” is the national key discipline and “cryptography” is the provincial and ministerial key discipline, which are among the first batch of master’s and doctoral academic areas approved by the State Council of China and have set up the “Cheung Kong Scholar Program” chair professorship. The disciplinary group of “modern communication network engineering” of the School has been given the prior support by the “10th Five-Year Plan” construction program for the national “211 project”. In 2002, the first-level discipline “information and communication engineering” ranked second in the national appraisal.
   The School’s scientific research capability is great with rich fruits. The School developed the first meteor trail communication system, the first millimeter-wave communication equipment and the first ATM exchange in China, making great contributions to the development of China’s communication cause.
