Established in 1981, the Xidian University Union (XUU), whose full name is the Xidian University Branch of the Education Union of China, has a general office, a women staff committee, and a poverty relief office.
All the in-service teaching and administrative staff members and workers of the University are union members. At present, the XUU has 15 branches consisting of over 140 union groups. It has more than 10 committees or working groups such as the Working Committee of Young Teaching and Administrative Staff Members and over 10 social organizations such as the Photo Club.
Under the leadership of the University Party Committee and the union at the higher level, the XUU gives full play to the union’s four functions: organizational maintenance, construction, participation and education. In close conjunction with the University’s central tasks, the XUU unites the broad teaching and administrative staff members to actively protect their rights, optimize their living environment, and enliven their cultural life, thus playing an active role in the University’s reform, development and stability. The purpose of the XUU’s work is to construct a campus on which each teaching and administrative staff member can do his/her best, with each having a role to play and living in harmony with others, to build the University into a stable, ruling-by-law, fair and ordered campus, a campus with civilization, progress-making, creation and competition, and a campus with a free & unrestrained, harmonious, solicitude-showing and forgiveness-showing atmosphere, to further optimize interpersonal relationship so as to finally make the University a home for all the teaching and administrative staff members to live in, a spiritual paradise, and a cradle for producing talents.
In 1998, the XUU was given the title of “Advanced Collective for Democratic Management” by the national Education Union; in 2003, it won the title of “Advanced Collective for Fighting SARS” by the National Committee of the Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports Union of China; in 2006, it was appraised as the “Shaanxi Provincial Advanced Collective for Teachers’ Professional Ethics Construction” by the Shaanxi Provincial Education Union, the “National Advanced Collective for Teachers’ Professional Ethics Construction” by the National Committee of the Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports Union, and the “Advanced Unit for Making School Affairs Public” during the public inspection of school affairs of institutions of higher learning by the Shaanxi Provincial Commission of Education and the Shaanxi Provincial Education Union; and in 2008, it was assessed as the “Advanced Women Staff Committee” by the National Committee of the Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports Union.
