Xidian University started to admit graduate students in 1956 and resumed admitting graduate students in 1978 (after the Cultural Revolution). It is one of the first batch of units in China which have the right to confer the doctorate and master’s degree with the approval of the State Council. In 2004, the Graduate School was formally established. At present, there are over 9700 graduate students, of whom over 8000 are master students and over 1700 are doctoral candidates.
Xidian University has 27 doctoral programs (covering 3 disciplines of science, engineering and military science) and 63 master programs (covering 7 disciplines of liberal arts, legal science, education, management, science, engineering and military science), with the coverage of undergraduate disciplines reaching over 95%. Currently there are 4 national-grade key laboratories, 2 national first-level key disciplines (covering 6 second-level disciplines), 1 national second-level key discipline(cryptography)and 27 provincial/ministerial key disciplines. The University has set up 5 postdoctoral programs. Its excellent resources have laid a solid foundation for the University’s graduate education and opened up broad space for development.
Presently, Xidian University possesses not only a group of senior scholars who have great academic influence at home and abroad, but also a large number of young and meddle-aged academic backbones. It has 177 advisors of doctoral candidates and 609 advisors of master students. It can train master students and doctoral students in over 400 research fields.
It is on the basis of the outstanding superiority in discipline and strong academic and scientific research environment that the University’s graduate cultivation and school-running efficiency enjoy good reputation at home. The graduate-training quality of the University is improving steadily, with the doctoral dissertations of 6 doctoral candidates winning in succession the title of “100 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations”. Quite a few graduates have come into prominence in academic circles at home and abroad, becoming a new generation of academic foregoers.
The achievements the University has made in training graduate students are well received by the society. It has won the titles of “Advanced Collective of the National Academic Degree and Graduate Education & Management” (in 1999), “Advanced Collective of Graduate Employment of the National Regular Institutions of Higher Learning” (in 2001) and “Advanced Collective of Enrolment Work of the National Regular Institutions of Higher Learning” (in 2002).
